Why Heritage Preservation?

Heritage preservation is important because

  • it generates community pride
  • it contributes to the community's quality of life, making Sackville an attractive place in which to live, work, teach, study and retire
  • it is a key component to tourism growth
  • it can help promote economic development

Municipal Heritage Conservation Area By-law

In December 2010 the Town of Sackville adopted a Municipal Heritage Conservation Area By-law, under the terms of the N.B. Heritage Conservation Act, 2010. See sections 46-92 of the Act. The Bylaw, at present, designates two Municipal Heritage Conservation Areas: Area A, consisting of parts of Bridge Street, Main Street and York Street and Area B, consisting of part of York Street. Heritage By-law (606 KB PDF). The Board believes that this By-law is necessary if the conservation of one of the Town's most important assets, our heritage buildings, is to be ensured.

The heritage by-law applies to the following types of development within the desginated areas: 1) Construction of new buildings; 2) Alterations to existing buildings; 3) Additions to existing buildings; 4) Relocation of buildings into or within an area; 5) Demolition of existing buildings. In all cases, except demolition, the by-law applies only to the exterior of buildings.

When any such development is undertaken, in addition to the Building Permit required from the Tantramar Planning District Commission, a Municipal Heritage Permit is also required from the Heritage Board. Application for Municipal Heritage Permit (102 KB DOC)

A brochure explaining the by-law is available at the Town Hall.

Tantramar Historic Places

The Heritage Board has sponsored research into the historical and architectural significance of selected heritage properties in Sackville. With the help of two provincial grants, a Sackville Register of Historic Places was compiled in 2005 and 2006. Some 50 sites are included in the Register and have been added to the New Brunswick Register of Historic Places, as well as to the National Canadian Register of Historic Places where they can be accessed at Canadian Register of Historic Places: Sackville N.B.

Information on about 120 historic sites in the Tantramar area can be found at Tantramar Historic Sites, now part of the Tantramar Heritage Trust web site. Where appropriate the entries have links to the Canadian Register of Historic Places.
