The Town of Sackville's Heritage Review Board was appointed in December 2004 under the terms of the New Brunswick Municipal Heritage Preservation Act (1978). The Board's mandate includes advising the Town Council on heritage matters, researching local heritage architecture and history, providing a heritage educational program, and providing advice to property owners on heritage preservation.
In December 2006 the Board presented a report to Council recommending the designation of two Heritage Preservation Areas and the adoption of a Heritage By-Law. Currently the Town is in conversation with the Province regarding proposed new heritage legislation.
Why Heritage Preservation?
Heritage preservation is important because
- it generates community pride
- it contributes to the community's quality of life, making Sackville an attractive place in which to live, work, teach, study and retire
- it is a key component to tourism growth
- it can help promote economic development

Canadian Register of Historic Places
The Board has sponsored research into the historical and architectural significance of selected heritage properties in Sackville. With the help of two provincial grants, adminsitered through the provincial Heritage Branch, a Sackville Register of Historic Places was compiled for the Board by Phyllis Stopps, in two stages, in 2005 and 2006. Some 50 sites are included in the Register and almost all of them have now been added to the national Canadian Register of Historic Places and can be accessed at the Canada's Historic Places web site.
