Bob Edgett

Few communities are fortunate enough to have a hero of Bob Edgett's stature, this year's recipient of the New Brunswick Merit Award for Sport and Recreation. Soft-spoken and humble, Bob teaches by example. The values he promotes, self-respect and respect for others, commitment and sportsmanship have enriched the lives of the more than 10,000 students he has coached over the last 46 years.

In 1953, Bob founded the Bob Edgett Boys Club to introduce local boys to the sport of boxing and give them a healthy outlet for their energy. Since then, the Club has expanded to include girls, women and men of all ages. Bob has traveled extensively to promote the sport, and his Club has brought home 17 Canadian championships along with countless medals.

More important than public recognition is the personal growth these boxers have experienced. Boxing requires tremendous physical, as well as mental, endurance. The dedication Bob demands from his members helps them develop a lifelong appreciation for the benefits of exercise and discipline, which carries over into all aspects of life. Traveling together as a team, the boxers learn the value of co-operation and enjoy the camaraderie which often develops into lasting friendships.

Bob's genuine respect for the sport - and for people in general - is evident upon entering the club. Everyone receives equal treatment, support and encouragement. The equipment isn't fancy, but it's effective. The workout is tough, but exhilarating. Feel free to drop into the club any Monday, Wednesday and Friday evening between 7 and 9. It's located in a small gym on Upper York Street in Sackville. Everyone is welcome and membership is free.
