Parks & Recreation presents Summer Programs 2008

March 6th, 2008

The Department is pleased to announce they will be expanding their programs and services in 2008. More supervision at Lillas Fawcett Park, full day FunCamp Program and much more!

In 2008 the FunCamp program will be available on a full time basis, with half days still being offered. This is an exciting expansion for the program, as parents have been requesting this option for several years now.

"We'll also be offering a more educational based program, visiting local attractions, learning about environmental issues, and keeping the kids really active," claims Rebecca MacLean, Manager of Programs & Special Events, "it's a great opportunity to do more because we'll have the kids for more time." Running from July 2-August 20, the full day program will cost parents $150.

The Lifeguarding Services at Lillas Fawcett Park is also a benefactor of the expansion. From July 2-August 20 there will be lifeguards on site daily from 11am-7pm, a significant expansion over previous years.

"The number of visitors has increased over the last few years, and people are using the park more in the evening than before, so we're trying to facilitate that," says Deanna Cadman, Youth Programs Coordinator.

Other programs that the department offers annually include a Tennis Program, teaching the skills of the game to all ages and skill levels.

The Youth Leadership Program, for kids 13-15 is also a popular summer program which will benefit from changes in 2008. Still a 4 week program, the youth leaders will work more in the community volunteering and developing skills that will help them in the future. They will also get to go on an overnight camping trip, usually a highlight of the summer!
