Schools re-open on Tuesday September 6. At the best of times kids are unpredictable and can dart into traffic at any time. After their summer break, kids will be excited to get back to school and may not be attentive when crossing roads. Please look out for the kids and be extra cautious when driving in school zones.
Here are some suggested tips for school zone safety:
-
- Expect the unexpected.
- Respect the posted speed limits.
- Obey the crossing guard at all times.
- Do not pass other vehicles in a school zone.
- Do not pull over upstream of a crosswalk.
- Always stop for a school bus when its lights are flashing.
- Learn and follow your school’s rules.
- Teach your children the rules of the road. Students of all ages can benefit from a refresher on pedestrian safety and school bus rules. Remind them regularly:
-
-
- Follow the rules of the road, and obey signs and signals.
- Walk on sidewalks whenever available.
- If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and as far from traffic as possible.
- Cross streets at crosswalks or intersections. Look for cars in all directions before starting to cross. Continue watching for traffic as you cross.
- Watch for cars entering or exiting driveways, or backing up in parking lots.
