September 30th is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Sackville’s Town Hall and Public Works Depot will be closed on September 30th in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Please be advised that flags at all Town facilities will be lowered to half-mast from sunrise to sunset on Friday, September 30, 2022, in recognition and remembrance of the Indigenous children, families and communities who have suffered harm, and in honour of the lives lost at residential schools.

Residents are encouraged to increase their knowledge about Canada’s Indian Residential School System and the resulting impact on Indigenous communities and Canadian society overall, as a small step on the ongoing path towards reconciliation.

A key resource is the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) website, which contains TRC reports and findings, as well as educational resources and related information.

The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and Aboriginal Peoples Television Network have co-produced a one-hour commemorative gathering, Remember me: A national day of remembrance”,  that will broadcast live on September 30, 2022 at 1:00 pm ET from Ottawa. In their words, “the special gathering will serve as an opportunity for people in Canada to grieve, heal and learn about this tragic history.”
