Council Regular Meeting Highlights – April 9, 2024

Council Updates:
- Infrastructure and Equipment Upgrades: Council approved proposals for essential infrastructure and equipment upgrades. These include the purchase of a new zero-turn mower for the Active Living & Culture Department and a new hybrid vehicle for the for our Parks team to keep our green spaces looking great.
Additionally, upgrades to the Queens Road Lift Station and the acquisition of new self-contained breathing apparatus for both the Dorchester and Sackville Fire Departments were approved.
- Local Summer Business Initiatives: Council approved two exciting business initiatives for this summer. The public will have The Ice Cream Coop opening at Bill Johnstone Park, and a new café opening at the Sackville Visitor Information Centre to look forward to this summer. Exact dates are to be determined.
- Community Support: Council gave the green light to proposals that will be lending support to the Shiretown Festival and Levee on the Lake.
Council has also chosen to support the ice subsidy for TRHS. This show of support emphasizes Council’s commitment to ensuring local hockey teams are receiving the necessary assistance required to operate to the best of their abilities.
- Environmental Sustainability Focus: Council adopted new terms of reference recommended by the Tantramar Climate Change Advisory Committee and has also approved a budget of $35,000 for 2024 Climate Change Initiatives. This action is part of the council’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its environmental policies and respond proactively to climate change challenges.
- By-law Amendments: A by-law related to the provision of policing services had it’s first reading at last nights meeting. The By-Law provides direction on the establishment, operation, and terms of the provision of policing services within Tantramar.
