Council Regular Meeting Highlights – June 11, 2024

Council Updates:

Community Appointments and Services:

  • Town Crier: Lidvald Haugen-Strand has been named the new Town Crier for Tantramar.
    • A plaque was awarded to David Fullerton for his selfless dedication in the role of Town Crier for the town of Sackville from October 12, 2004 – June 23, 2022. 18 Years of incredible service!
  • TVMCC Gasket Replacement: The motion to replace the gasket at Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre was approved.

Events and Festivals:

  • Sandpiper Festival: Approved the street closure for the Sandpiper Festival.
  • Fall Fair 2024: Multiple approvals including:
    • Street closures on Main Street, Ford Lane, and Dufferin Street.
    • Authorization for fireworks display, noise by-law exceptions, and liquor license application.
    • Use of Mount Allison University field for the midway.
    • Hiring SSI Sound Specialists for sound and lighting in the event tent.

Infrastructure and Development:

  • Shiretown Parade Route Change: The new parade route was approved due to increased traffic considerations on the former route.
  • Station Road Reconstruction: Approved the tender for Station Road reconstruction in Dorchester.
  • Land Reconveyance: Approved reconveyance of Lot 94-5 in the Sackville Industrial Park Subdivision.

Environmental and Policy Initiatives:

  • Environmental Trust Fund: Accepted funding for the “Creation and Touring of a Wetlands Themed Play for Youth.” The Environmental Trust Fund (ETF) aids with action-oriented projects aimed at protecting, preserving and enhancing New Brunswick’s natural environment.
  • Conflict of Interest Policy: Approved Policy 2024-12.
  • Substance Use Policy: Approved Policy 2024-13.

Other Notable Decisions:

  • Dorchester Fire Truck: Approved the purchase of a new Pumper/Tanker for the Dorchester Fire Department.
  • Visitor Centre Building: Motion carried for staff to begin discussions with the province about the former visitor centre building in Aulac.

By-Laws:

  • Health and Safety By-Law: Approved first and second readings for By-Law No. 2024-13 relating to the promotion of health and safety of residents.
  • Adoption and Interpretation of By-Laws: Approved first and second readings for By-Law No. 2024-14.
  • Loitering and Begging By-Law: The motion to implement a new by-law was defeated. Staff will reevaluate a new by-law to ensure residents are protected.
