Council Highlights – Regular Meeting, September 9, 2024 

Council Highlights provide a brief overview of the latest Regular Council meeting. For complete details, please refer to the official minutes, which will be available after the upcoming Committee of the Whole meeting. 

The September 9th meeting covered important discussions on infrastructure, community safety, and future developments in the Municipality of Tantramar.  

Public Presentations 

  • Heritage as Part of the Strategic Plan: Meredith Fisher presented on incorporating heritage into the Municipality’s Strategic Plan.  
  • Dog Park Proposal: Carla Vanbeselaere introduced a proposal for a new dog park, providing a space for pets and their owners to socialize and exercise.  

Council Approvals 

During the Regular Meeting, the following motions were passed: 

Kenridge Park Subdivision Phase 3 – Public Streets: Council approved improvements for emergency access to the Kenridge Park Subdivision by creating new public streets, significantly enhancing safety for residents and emergency services. 

Sackville Water Treatment Plant – Low Lift Pump: Council approved the purchase of a low lift pump at the Sackville Water Treatment Plant, ensuring continued reliable water services for the community. 

Veolia Contract Renewal: Council renewed the contract with Veolia Water Canada, which manages the municipal water treatment facilities. With over 170 years of expertise, Veolia ensures the quality and safety of Tantramar’s water system. 

Additional Street Closure for Fall Fair Fireworks: Council approved an additional street closure for the Fall Fair Fireworks on Friday, September 20, 2024 (rain date: Saturday, September 21). Wellington and Lorne Streets will be closed from 8:00 PM – 9:30 PM. Residents are advised to find alternate parking and plan ahead. 

Long Grass and Vegetative Growth By-Law: Councillor Matt Estabrooks introduced a motion directing staff to create a by-law regulating long grass and vegetative growth to improve community appearance and safety. The motion was passed. 

Consent Agenda Approvals 

The following items were passed as part of the Consent Agenda: 

  • Pride Parade 2024: Approval of the Pride Parade route and street closures. 
  • Mount Allison Storage & Locker Room Agreement: Formalized an agreement for storage and locker room use at the Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre. 
  • Energy Audits for Select Municipal Buildings: An audit will be conducted on municipal buildings to ensure energy efficiency and cost savings. 
  • Dorchester Fire Department Protective Equipment: Approval was given for the purchase of new bunker gear for the Dorchester Fire Department, reinforcing a 2024 priority action commitment to health & safety. 

Comments 

  • Mayor Andrew Black congratulated Sappyfest and Levee on the Lake for their successful events this summer. Mayor Black also reiterated that updates on the Wheaton Covered Bridge are still pending. 
  • Councillor Debbie Wiggins-Colwell requested an update on the new Zamboni building in Dorchester. Director of Active Living and Culture, Matt Pryde responded that the much-anticipated work on the new Zamboni building is beginning soon.
