Council Highlights provide a brief overview of the latest Regular Council Meeting. For complete details, please refer to the official minutes, which will be available once approved at the next Regular Council Meeting.
Regular Council Meetings are where important decisions are made to guide our community’s development and future. Here’s a snapshot of the key discussions and decisions from this meeting.
Council Motions
Bulk Salt Purchase for Winter 2024/2025: Council approved the purchase of bulk salt to ensure our roads stay safe during the winter months.
Quarry Park Bridge: Exciting news! The pedestrian bridge for Quarry Park was approved, with construction set to begin soon.
Commercial Waste Containers: Council authorized staff to retain Miller Waste Systems as the service provider for supply of commercial waste containers at municipal sites and regular collection of the waste from February 1, 2025 to January 31, 2030.
Canada Community Building Fund Agreement: Council signed off on a long-term agreement to secure funding for vital community projects over the next decade.
Freshwinds Housing Rezoning: The rezoning of 106 Fairfield Road for the Freshwinds Eco-Village Housing Co-operative will be entering into the process of potential rezoning, marking a significant step toward more diverse housing options in our municipality.
Downtown Building Height Amendment: Council has considered an application to amend the by-law to allow a zoning change in our Municipality to allow taller buildings in the Sackville downtown business district.
Waste Collection Service Contract: Council authorized Fero to perform waste management services for the former LSD areas to ensure continuous waste collection services in the former local service district areas. Residents rest assured, this does not create any changes to your routine pick-up.
Housing Community Engagement Initiative: Councillor Josh Goguen’s motion for funding to host a two-day housing event was approved, aiming to bring together landlords, tenants, and the broader community to discuss solutions to local housing challenges.
By-Laws
Why Do Some By-laws Still Say ‘Town of Sackville’ or ‘Village of Dorchester’? Residents might notice some of our by-laws and documents still refer to the former governments. As we transition into the Municipality of Tantramar, these by-laws will be gradually updated to reflect our new government structure. Until then, they remain fully enacted under their current names. Over time, all official documents will be renamed to align with the Municipality of Tantramar.
Business Improvement Area Levy: Council gave the first and second readings to a by-law that will establish a special levy for the Business Improvement Area, supporting the continued growth and vibrancy of our local businesses.
Zoning Amendments: Council passed 1st & 2nd reading of amendments to the Sackville municipal plan and the Sackville zoning by-law for improvements to a property on York street.
Celebrating Community
Mayor Andrew Black proudly congratulated Deanna Cadman on her incredible achievement of completing a 1-kilometer walk at the recent Run for the Cure event in Moncton, NB. To celebrate Deanna’s inspiring effort, both Mayor Black and Director of Active Living and Culture, Matt Pryde, will be dyeing their hair pink in support of her accomplishment. Well done, Deanna—you’ve truly inspired us all!
Councillor Mike Tower gave a special shout-out to Ryan, a local citizen who captains the Moncton Marauder’s medieval combat team, bringing attention to Sackville with a successful tournament that drew coverage from CBC.
Councillor Debbie Wiggins-Colwell extended heartfelt birthday wishes to Ernie, a beloved community member, who recently celebrated his 95th birthday. Happy Birthday, Ernie!
Councillor Debbie Wiggins-Colwell had a statement, upon which council moved into a closed session under section 68(1) of the local governance act.
