Municipality of Tantramar Acquires Historic Sackville VIA Rail Station
[Tantramar, NB] – The Municipality of Tantramar is pleased to announce an agreement with VIA Rail Canada Inc. to acquire the historic Sackville train station, ensuring its preservation and future revitalization for the benefit of the community.
Under this agreement, VIA Rail will transfer ownership of the station to the municipality in exchange, the municipality will assume responsibility for the station’s maintenance, including snow removal. Once renovations are complete, VIA Rail passengers will have access to an indoor waiting area and facilities. Mayor Andrew Black emphasized the significance of the agreement, stating, “Council is committed to preserving the rich heritage of our community while also fostering economic growth. This agreement allows us to maintain a key historical landmark, repurpose it for community use, and continue to support rail service in Tantramar.”
The Municipality of Tantramar intends to lease the station to a local business that expressed interest to the municipality, bringing new activity to the space while ensuring the long-term sustainability of the property. This initiative aligns with the municipality’s commitment to heritage preservation and economic development.
In accordance with the Heritage Railway Stations Protection Act and Heritage Railway Stations Regulations, the station transfer will be publicly posted for sixty (60) days, allowing interested parties to submit objections. Once the Public Notice is available it will be linked here.
Further information regarding the final purchase and sale agreement will be provided in accordance with the Local Governance Act.
