Council Highlights – Committee of the Whole, June 23, 2025

As a reminder, Committee of the Whole meetings do not involve formal decisions but serve to inform, explore, and shape future Council direction.

Council Discussions and Directions 

Sackville Sports Wall of Fame – Board of Directors: Council reviewed a request to approve the recommended appointments to the Sackville Sports Wall of Fame Board of Directors. The item will be brought forward for decision at the July 9 Regular Council Meeting. 

2025 Sandpiper Festival: Staff presented a plan for the 2025 Sandpiper Festival, including proposed dates of July 24–27 and a $20,000 event budget. Council expressed support for the beloved festival and will revisit the request at the July meeting. 

Ferret Scout Car Refurbishment: Council discussed a funding request of $4,000 from the Heritage Trust for the refurbishment of the historic Ferret Scout Car displayed at Bill Johnstone Park. The item will return to Council in July for further consideration. 

2025 Sackville Triathlon: Council reviewed an event request for the 2025 annual Sackville Triathlon to be held Sunday, August 24. The event will require street closures, first aid services, and RCMP support. Council will consider approval in July. Interested in participating? Register for the triathlon here.  

2025 Pride Parade: Council discussed a request to host the annual Sackville Pride Parade on August 9, 2025, as part of Sackville Pride Week. The event will involve a short parade route through downtown. Final approval will be brought forward at a future meeting. 

Policy 2025-16 – Tantramar Pole Banner Policy: Following earlier discussions, staff presented an updated version of the Pole Banner Policy with proposed amendments regarding placement, timeline, and approval process. Council requested additional refinements and will revisit the policy at a Regular Council Meeting. 

Policy 2025-17 – Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre (TVMCC) Banner Policy: Similar to the Pole Banner Policy, the updated TVMCC Banner Policy was presented for feedback. Council requested further clarification and revisions before the policy returns for formal consideration. 

NB Power Transmission Line Easement: Staff reviewed a request from NB Power for an easement across municipally owned land to support an upgraded transmission line. Council requested that the matter be brought forward in July for further review and decision. 

Streetlights Report: Staff provided a comprehensive report outlining current streetlight coverage and gaps across the municipality. Council will continue discussing at the next regular council meeting.
