Canada Day Activities CANCELLEDJuly 1
The Town of Sackville is located within the territory of Mi’kma’ki, the unceded, ancestral territory of the Mi’kmaq people.
In light of recent findings at residential schools in Western Canada, and in ongoing consultation with our friends and neighbours in Fort Folly First Nation, the Town of Sackville has decided to cancel all Canada Day Activities. Although it was our original intent, in consultation with Fort Folly, to offer some activities, it was never the Town’s intent to celebrate given the former Kamloops Residential School discovery. In the last two days, things have changed with the announcement in Saskatchewan, and we have determined that on July 1, 2021, it would be more appropriate and important for our Town residents to pause, educate ourselves and reflect on darker times in the history of our country. Over the years, we have made progress, but even today, Indigenous peoples face systemic injustices.

Support is available for anyone affected by their experience at residential schools, and those who are triggered by the latest reports.
A national Indian Residential School Crisis Line has been set up to provide support for survivors and those affected. People can access emotional and crisis referral services by calling the 24-hour national crisis line: 1-866-925-4419. A Saskatchewan-based line is now available by calling 306-522-7494.
