Chignecto Naturalists’ Club Monthly Meeting – Guest speaker, Dr. Laura Tranquilla, Birds Studies CanadaMay 15
The presentation for the evening will be, “Tracking Birds in the Maritimes with Automated Telemetry: The Motus Wildlife Tracking System.”
Effective conservation of birds relies, in part, on understanding how, when, and where they use particular habitats. Using miniature transmitters to track birds, we begin to understand how birds behave in different landscapes, and what types of habitats they use during migration, which then helps direct conservation efforts. Bird Studies Canada is helping organize the tools that enable a team of researchers to track migration of multiple species (eg. Blackpoll Warbler, Red Knot, Semipalmated Sandpiper) through the Atlantic Region, and ultimately, to their migration destinations. This talk will review highlights of the tracking program, and discuss challenges and opportunities for the tracking network in the Maritimes.
The meeting starts at 7:30pm at the Sackville Commons on Main Street.
All are welcome!
