De-Lighting the Night Sky

January 9, 2018

De-Lighting the Night Sky, a talk with Curt Nason. A star-filled sky is one of nature’s great wonders; one that we are at risk of losing due to light pollution. Most people in the world have never seen the Milky Way and would not know what it is if they did see it. Light pollution has several forms and its effect on the night sky is just one detriment. Light pollution can also affect our health, safety, environment and pocketbook. Artificial lighting is important, but it needs to be optimized so that it illuminates only where is required and to a reasonable level. This presentation will touch on the types of light pollution, its societal effects, what we can do to diminish it, and why that would delight astronomers.
Hosted by EOS Eco-Energy for Climate Change Week. Sponsored by Environmental Trust Fund.
