Decolonisation: Who Owns Heritage?

December 2, 2021

A public lecture by Dr. Evelyne Godfrey, Department of Classics, Mount Allison University.

Heritage place-making and identity context is essential for us to understand the
background of decolonisation and anti-racism, but there is a danger of informed
discussion being shut down on campuses in many places. In this talk, we’ll look at two
as yet unresolved case-studies of repatriation of cultural heritage acquired under
colonial circumstances by institutions in Britain: an important Mi’gmaw
archaeological assemblage that has been held at Oxford University’s Pitt Rivers
Museum for the past eighty years, and the Parthenon sculptures held in the British
Museum.

Standard Covid protocols in place. Contact: classics@mta.ca
