Explore the fossil cliffs of Joggins and Lower Cove, NS with Chignecto Naturalists’ ClubOctober 14, 2017
The Chignecto Naturalists’ Club has scheduled a field trip to the fossil cliffs of Joggins and Lower Cove, NS. with geologist Ken Adams on Saturday 14 October 2017.
WHAT: The cliffs at Joggins contain one of the most complete records of life during the “Coal Age”. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008 they attract visitors from around the world to view 15 million years of geological history, and an abundance of plant and animal fossils including the oldest record of reptiles. The area has a rich history of coal mining and grind stone quarrying.
WHERE: Sackville people should meet in the parking lot behind the Sackville Post Office at 9:50 am for carpooling and a 10 am departure. Amherst participants should meet in the parking lot at Canadian Tire for carpooling and a 10:20 am departure.
Those who wish to travel on their own should meet the group at the Lower Cove bridge at 11 am. Directions: Entering Joggins, turn right on Pit Rd then take Lower Cove Rd toward Lower Cove & Minudie. After approximately 3 km meet at the new concrete bridge over Little River.
WHEN: Saturday 14th October 2017. Rain date Sunday 15th October
WHO: Everyone is welcome, whether a CNC member or not. Bring a friend!
BRING: A lunch, water and snacks to be eaten on the beach. STURDY footwear in case we encounter rocks. Geological field guides, notepads and pencils if you wish.
LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: This trip is, at a minimum, a one hour beach walk, with some possibility of rocks to be navigated.
