The Contribution of Small-Scale Fisheries to Local Food Systems in the Lake Superior Region
My research looks at the intersection of food security and natural resource management in rural and coastal settings. In this talk, I will look at the contributions of small-scale fisheries to local food systems in the Lake Superior region. Although fisheries are an important food source, they often are managed for the purpose of economic efficiency, rather than for their food-related values. Drawing on fieldwork and interviews undertaken around Lake Superior this past summer, this talk will look at how fisheries are embedded in local food systems around Lake Superior with a view to identifying ways of strengthening their contributions to nutrition, culture, and livelihoods.
