Vet Lloyd – “Ticks on the Tantramar – Lyme disease and other tick borne diseases”

Ticks are 8-legged relatives of spiders. But unlike spiders, ticks live by taking blood meals from warm blooded animals – like humans, dogs, cats and wildlife. In the process of feeding, they transmit disease. Lyme disease is the best known of the tick borne diseases but the various species of ticks present in the Tantramar region transmit many other kinds of pathogens as well. Ticks not only live locally but travel to this region on birds, so the Tantramar region is a hotbed for different types of ticks. In this presentation, Dr. Vett Lloyd will describe the different types of ticks in this area, recent research into the risk they pose to human and animal health and some pointers on how not to get a tick bite.
