Inside the Ivory Tower – Big Data and YouFebruary 26, 2020
Inside the Ivory Tower features lunch-hour talks by Mount Allison University researchers. Sessions occur on the last Wednesday of each month in the Council Chambers, Sackville Town Hall from 12 noon-1 pm. Four talks are scheduled for this term.
Dr. Matthew Betti, Mathematics and Computer Science
As computers get better at processing information and people generate more data, we are able to make inferences from data that used to be meaningless. We’ll talk about data as a commodity and some forms of personal data that you exchange for services and how it may get used. Some questions we can talk about: What are cookies and why do we have to agree to them on almost every webpage? Why did Facebook try to convince US congress that it needs to know your location at all times? We’ll look at what kind of data tracking is relatively benign and how some data collection can become malicious.
Matt Betti holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics from Western University. He is a professor of Math & Computer Science at Mount Allison University. While the focus of his research is mainly in ecology and evolutionary biology, he often deals with large amounts of data through his research.
