MtA Music Colloquium: Mozart’s Music of Friends
September 20, 2023In 1829, Goethe famously described the string quartet as a “conversation among four intelligent people.” Inspired by this metaphor, Dr. Edward Klorman (McGill University) draws from historical evidence about musical salons and from musical analysis to explore social interplay in Mozart’s chamber music. This presentation develops an analytical concept called “multiple agency” that interprets the various players within an ensemble as participants in stylized social discourse – characters who are capable of surprising, seducing, outwitting, and even deceiving one another musically, and whose interactions are animated in performance.
