MtA Music: Symposium on Music and War

Mount Allison’s Department of Music presents a Symposium on Music and War, October 25-27, 2024. This dynamic event will bring together scholars, performers, creators, students, and teachers to consider and reflect upon the many ways in which music has been informed by, and responded to, times of conflict and unrest. With outstanding concerts and engaging keynote talks by leading performers and scholars from across North America, this is a truly unique event for our community.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2024
• 1:30 pm Keynote Address: Prof. Marsha Vicaire (Mount Allison University)
Mawagnutma’tinej: Sparking Dialogue Through the Arts – Grand Room, Windsor Hall
• 4:30 pm Keynote Address: Dr. Abby Anderton (City University of New York)
Reflections on Music, Testimony, and War in the Twentieth and Twenty-First Centuries
• 7:30 pm Guest Recital: Tesla Quartet – 15th Annual J.E.A. Crake Concert
World-renowned Tesla Quartet perform a recital including Steve Reich’s “Different Trains” and George Crumb’s “Black Angels” for string quartet. This concert is presented with the generous support of the J.E.A. Crake Foundation.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2024
• 1:00 pm Keynote Address: Dr. John Watkins (University of Minnesota)
Britten’s Noye’s Fludde – Reflections on Children, War, and Memory
• 4:00 pm Keynote Address: Dr. Alexander Fisher (University of British Columbia)
Resonances of War and Peace in the Age of Schütz
• 7:30 pm Faculty and Guest Recital: Music in tempore belli
Musical Selections from the Seventeenth to the Twenty-First Centuries.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2024
• 1:00 pm Keynote Address: Dr. Dean Burry (Queen’s University)
Tracing Colville: A Musical Exploration of the War Art of Alex Colville
• 3:00 pm Student Recital
Performances by students, ensembles, and chamber music groups from the Mount Allison Department of Music, including premières of new compositions.
• 7:30 pm Film Screening
Excerpts from “Canada at War” (1962), with music by Canadian composer Robert Fleming and others. Introductory remarks will be presented by Prof. Berkeley Fleming.

All events in Brunton Auditorium, Marjorie Young Bell Conservatory of Music, except where noted.

Events are free with the exception of the Friday and Saturday evening concerts ($15 adults/$10 seniors and students/$30 families, cash at the door). All events are free for current Mount Allison students.
