MtA Music: Winterreise – Bragg Artist-in-Residence Guest RecitalJanuary 12, 2019
The Mount Allison Department of Music presents the Bragg Artist-in-Residence Guest Recital, featuring celebrated Canadian soprano Adrianne Pieczonka with pianist Rachel Andrist in a performance of Schubert’s song cycle Winterreise (Winter Journey). This recital will take place in Brunton Auditorium at the Marjorie Young Bell Conservatory of Music (134 Main Street, Sackville, NB) on Saturday January 12, 2019 at 7:30 p.m.
Adrianne Pieczonka will join Mount Allison as the inaugural Bragg Artist-in-Residence from January 11 to 16, 2019. Internationally celebrated for her interpretations of Wagner, Strauss, Verdi, and Puccini, she has brought to life such powerful women as Senta, Chrysothemis, Sieglinde, the Marschallin, the Kaiserin, Tosca, Elisabetta, and Amelia on leading opera and concert stages in Europe, North America, and Asia. Ms. Pieczonka has performed at New York’s Metropolitan Opera, the Vienna Staatsoper, ROH Covent Garden, and in Paris, Berlin, Madrid, Munich, Frankfurt, Los Angeles, La Scala and many of Europe’s finest summer festivals. She spent many years living in and touring Europe but has returned to Canada to make her home in Toronto. She is an Officer of the Order of Canada, the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, and was named a Kammersängerin by the Austrian government. In May 2013 she was named an Honourary Fellow of The Royal Conservatory of Music and in 2014 she received the Paul de Hueck and Norman Walford Career Achievement Award. She holds honorary doctorates from her alma mater, the University of Western Ontario, and McMaster University.
Canadian pianist Rachel Andrist has been a regular guest at the Salzburg Festival and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, and has been on the staff of the Glyndebourne Festival, De Nederlandse Opera, English National Opera, and Scottish Opera. Since 2008, she has been the head coach for the Young Singers Project at the Salzburg Festival, the head of Musical Projects at the Royal Danish Opera Academy, and a guest at the Chicago Opera Theater. In the fall of 2010, Rachel returned to Canada to join the music staff at the Canadian Opera Company; she is now a faculty member of The Glenn Gould School.
Tickets for the performance of Schubert’s Winterreise are $15 adults/$10 seniors and students. Free for current Mount Allison students with valid ID card.
