Mozart’s little-known Rondo in D Major for flute (KV Ahn. 184) is a charming foretaste of the composer’s later, more substantial, flute works. A cornerstone of the flute repertoire, J.S. Bach’s Partita in A Minor for solo flute sees the composer at the height of a contemplative period; this is followed by Canadian composer Jacques Hétu’s meditation on the Partita: “Fantaisie sur le nom de Bach” for solo flute. “Andante and Scherzo” by Louis Ganne epitomizes works written during the rise of the flute to its present status as a recital instrument through the Paris Conservatoire, and Schubert’s monumental “Introduction and Variations on ‘Trockne Blumen’” explores the emotional nuances within his song cycle Die schöne Müllerin.
